How to Care for Linen Bedding: A Complete Guide

Why linen bedding?

Linen bedding is the only choice if you want the most relaxed, comfortable sleep without forfeiting sustainability, and 100% French Flax is the highest quality there is. Unlike other fabrics, which get scruffy and scratchy with time, flax linen bed sheets grow softer with every wash, becoming even more enticing as they age. Thermo-regulating fibres keep you cool in summer and warm in winter – while still allowing your skin to breathe. Our flax is sourced from traceable producers who are committed to environmentally-friendly and ethical production. From seed to fibre, there’s zero irrigation, zero GMO and zero waste - making it the healthiest choice for you and the planet.

It’s important to give this wonder fabric a level of care that’s as unique as it is, so we’ve put together this handy linen bedding care guide, with our top tips to wash and care for linen bedding to make sure you get the best out of it for years to come!

The best ways to wash linen bedding

Washing linen sheets is very simple! With just a little bit of extra care, you can enjoy the increasingly softening fabric more and more each time you wash. Firstly, ensure you only wash with other linen items, and always wash on a low temperature, gentle cycle, and with mild detergents (avoid bleach, harsh chemicals and fabric softener). When it comes to drying linen sheets, air-drying is best! If you’re in a rush and must tumble dry, ensure you do so on a low setting, and don’t overload the dryer. And that’s it! Treat your linens with love, and they’ll love you right back. Simple.

To iron or not to iron? The crumpled vs. smooth debate!

Should you iron linen bedding? We get asked this question a lot, and the answer is truly up to you. One of our favourite things about linen is its unique, natural texture – which, yes, includes those little lines and creases! These little quirks add to linen’s appeal, and create a relaxed, casual look. However, if you are a stickler for perfection, you absolutely can iron linen sheets. Remove them from the dryer while they’re still slightly damp and iron on a moderate steam setting. You can also use a steamer for a similar effect! Just remember, linen is not like other fabrics – you’ll never get rid of every tiny crease, and you shouldn’t want to! We encourage you to embrace its natural texture, wrinkles and all.

How to store and love your linen for life

Caring for linen bedding goes beyond just washing and drying. Ensuring it is stored and used correctly means you can expect a much longer lifespan for your linen! Store in breathable storage (preferably the linen bags you receive them in!), away from moisture, extreme temperatures and insects. Linen can snag easily, so while we love our furry friends, we recommend keeping them and their claws off the bed! The same goes for jewellery and other sharp items. Be aware that pillowcases and bottom sheets, which are naturally exposed to more sweat and movement, will wear faster than blankets and top sheets. That’s where our handy separates come in!

Lasting linen

Linen is a long-term investment. Learn to love its unique life cycle, and how it softens and changes alongside you. After time, you might find you don’t want to iron your linen bedding, or you need to refresh it less as it gets more supple with age. With linen, less is more – our top tips to keep it fresh and lovely are to love it, leave it, wash it, and air it. You can also get some stunning linen sprays to add a touch of floral fragrance to your sheets (take a look at ours here!). Styling your linen bedding is a fun and creative experience – its textured look lends itself to lots of layers, blankets, and contrasting prints and colours. Take a look through our product pages for more inspiration.

So, there you have it! Our handy guide to caring for linen bedding. We hope this encourages you to take that exciting step and make your first ever linen bedding purchase – once you do, you’ll never look back!
